The Phlebotomist, God, and I

Trying to get blood drawn today
but there is no blood.
The tube fills momentarily
but stops. The capillary starburst
there is no blood.

Drink more water they say,
though I am sick of water
my urine I could drink.

They must draw blood, for something
is wrong
but they cannot draw blood
for something
is wrong.

There must be blood today,
I cry, God please
let there be blood. I need
my blood to flow today.

‘No,’ the cruel God hushes,
‘No,
it’s mine.’
