Careful, Carefully

Careful, careful I tiptoe down
Careful, careful the shades aren’t drawn
Careful, careful I doubt truth and love out loud
Careful, carefully avoid the dawn
Careful, carefully avoid the light
Bed sheets drown out the whirring outside
Careful, careful I don’t stir
Careful, carefully the cat walks backward
Out the room into the hall to lie
Careful, careful not to cry
Careful, careful not to click my teeth
Careful, careful not to spill a drop of me
Carefully bandage the browning mark
Careful, ever careful not to disturb
The widening dark.
